Yes, for most cold email campaigns, turn open tracking off. The pixel costs you a small amount of inbox placement, and the open rate it buys is no longer accurate enough to make decisions with. Watch reply rate and bounce rate instead.
The honest version is more nuanced than "tracking pixels kill deliverability." The pixel is not a cliff. It is a tax, paid on every send, in a channel where cold mail is already scored more harshly than anything else in the inbox. You are giving up margin to buy a number that the platforms sitting on the data no longer trust enough to publish.
How open tracking actually works
An open is not a read. It is an image request.
When you enable open tracking, your sending platform appends a 1x1 transparent image to the HTML body of every email. That image is hosted on a tracking domain. When the recipient's mail client loads remote images, it requests the pixel, the platform logs the request, and you get a row that says "opened at 09:14."
Two things follow from that mechanism, and both matter more than the metric.
First, the email has to be HTML. A genuine plain-text message has nowhere to put a pixel. So every cold email you send becomes a multipart message carrying a hidden remote image, which is a different shape of mail than the one-person-typing-to-another-person email you are trying to imitate.
Second, that image points at a domain that is not your sending domain. Link tracking does the same thing from the other end, rewriting every URL to redirect through the tracking domain. Each message now references a second domain, with its own reputation, that receiving filters evaluate alongside yours.
Why open tracking costs you inbox placement
Filters do not score the From domain in isolation. They score the whole message, and the domains referenced inside the body are part of that. This is the piece people miss when they assume authentication is the only thing deciding placement.
The shared tracking domain is the real problem
If you never configured a custom tracking domain, your pixel and your rewritten links point at your sending platform's shared default. That domain is used by every other customer who also skipped the setup step, including the ones sending genuinely abusive mail.
Domain-based blocklists list URL and image domains, not just sending domains. When enough bad senders burn a shared tracking domain, every message referencing it inherits the damage. Your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC can be flawless and aligned, your domain warmed for six weeks, and your mail still gets filtered because of a hostname in your body copy that you did not choose and cannot fix. The Spamhaus removal process applies to a listed tracking domain too, except you do not control it. This failure mode is invisible from inside your dashboard, and it is the strongest single argument for turning tracking off.
A custom tracking domain is better, not free
Pointing track.yourdomain.com at your platform with a CNAME fixes the shared-reputation problem. It does not remove the cost. You have introduced a new subdomain with no history, referenced in every message, that warmup does not build reputation for the way it does your sending mailboxes. The structural signals stay too: a hidden remote image, an HTML-only body, a redirect wrapper on your links. Those patterns cluster in bulk mail and rarely appear in the personal correspondence your cold email is trying to resemble.
A custom domain takes you from "someone else's reputation can sink you" down to "you are paying a small structural tax." Real improvement. Still a tax.
Open rate stopped being a trustworthy number
Even if the pixel were free, the metric it produces is broken in two directions at once.
It inflates. Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches remote images through a proxy the moment mail arrives, whether or not a human ever looks at it. Every Apple Mail recipient is logged as an open. Corporate security gateways do the same for a different reason, fetching images and following links in a sandbox to check for malware.
It deflates. Plenty of desktop and corporate clients block remote images by default. Those recipients can read your email start to finish and never register.
Your open rate is therefore the sum of a segment that opens automatically and a segment that never registers, in a ratio set by your list's composition rather than by your campaign. Two campaigns with identical inbox placement can report very different open rates purely because one list skews Apple and the other skews locked-down enterprise Outlook. That is not something you can A/B test against.

What you actually give up
Turning tracking off is not costless, and anyone who says it is has not run reporting for a client.
- Subject line testing loses its cleanest signal. Opens were the one metric that isolated the subject line from everything downstream. Without them you test subject lines by their effect on replies, which needs more volume and more patience.
- You lose the fastest early warning. Open rate moved within a day of a placement problem. Reply rate takes several days to show the same thing, because replies arrive on the prospect's schedule.
- Per-step engagement goes dark. You will not know whether step three of the sequence is being read.
- Client reports need a conversation. If a client has read an open-rate line for a year, removing it needs explaining before it needs doing.
The first two are worth taking seriously. The counterweight is that both were already degraded by the measurement problems above, so what you are giving up is a noisy early warning rather than a precise one, and there is a direct replacement for it.
What to watch instead
The switch is from a proxy metric to the things the proxy was standing in for.

Two of those deserve emphasis. Baseline, not benchmark: a 2% reply rate is fine in the abstract, but a campaign that ran at 4% for a month and now sits at 2% has a problem regardless of what the reply rate benchmarks say. Compare a campaign against its own history, which is what makes a reply-rate slide readable as health rather than noise.
Placement tests do the job opens were doing, only better. Seeding a live campaign into Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo accounts you control tells you where the mail landed directly, instead of inferring it from whether a pixel fired. Reading a campaign without an open rate
This diagnostic is the one most people get backwards, and it works with or without tracking. Three symptoms, three completely different causes.

The first row is where the most time gets wasted. Copy improves replies. Copy does not take a campaign from 40% opens down to 9%. Well-targeted cold email to verified lists typically sits in the 40 to 70% range when tracking is reliable, so a single-digit open rate is not a subject-line problem another round of rewrites will solve. With tracking off, row one becomes "the placement test came back poor" and row two becomes "reply rate is under the campaign's baseline while bounces and volume look normal." The logic is unchanged. You are reading placement from a direct measurement instead of a pixel.
Bounces stay the simplest of the three and the most urgent. Above 2% you are actively teaching mailbox providers that you send to lists you did not build, which is the fastest route to filtering everything else. The bounce rate guide has the hard and soft breakdown.
When keeping open tracking is defensible
Two situations. The first is short and diagnostic: if you suspect a placement problem and want the fastest available proxy, turn tracking on for a few days, get your answer, turn it back off.
The second is contractual. Some clients have read an open-rate line for a year and will not accept its disappearance because you sent them a blog post. If you are stuck with it, at minimum move to a dedicated tracking subdomain per client so one burned domain does not travel across your whole book. Then start the conversation about what the report should contain instead: delivered, bounce rate, replies, positive replies, meetings booked. Turning it off without breaking your reporting
Instantly, Smartlead, and EmailBison all expose open tracking as a campaign-level toggle, usually next to link tracking. Three things to do around the switch.
- Record your reply-rate baseline first, so you have a comparison point that is not contaminated by the change.
- Expect the dashboard to look broken. Opens go to zero the day you flip it, and any alerting keyed to open rate will fire. Update those thresholds in the same sitting.
- Decide on link tracking separately. Keep it only if you genuinely act on click data, and put it on your own subdomain if you do.
Move one campaign, watch a week, then move the rest. Flipping every client at once leaves you nothing to attribute the change to.
