A cold email open rate dropped suddenly means one of six things — and the first one on this list explains most cases, so check them in order. The key discipline: compare against your own baseline, not a global benchmark. A campaign that fell from 60% to 30% has a problem even though 30% "sounds okay."
1. Your mail moved to spam (most likely, most urgent)
If sends are flat but opens fell off a cliff, the mail didn't stop going out — it stopped being seen. Spam placement is the failure that looks like an open-rate problem, and every day it continues burns the domain further.
Confirm it: send a test to a Gmail account you control and see where it lands; check Google Postmaster Tools for your domain's spam rate; run the sending domains through a deliverability checker — a DKIM or DMARC record that broke (or was never aligned) fails silently and produces exactly this pattern.
2. Sender reputation is sliding (the slow version of #1)
Not a cliff — a slope. Opens drift down 5% a week as reputation erodes from creeping bounce rates, rising complaint rates, or volume pushed past what the domain earned. The fix is the boring one: pause, verify the list, cut volume, let warmup rebuild.
3. You changed the subject line (or the sender name)

4. New mailboxes are diluting the average
Added fresh accounts to scale volume? Unwarmed or young mailboxes open-perform far worse than seasoned ones, and the blended rate reads as "opens dropped" when really "denominators changed." Check per-mailbox stats: if the old accounts hold steady and the new ones drag, it's a warmup problem, not a campaign problem.
5. Tracking noise, not reality
Open tracking is a pixel, and pixels are unreliable: privacy features auto-fire them (inflating opens) or block them (deflating opens). If your audience skews toward one mail provider and that provider changed image handling, your "drop" may be measurement. Cross-check with reply rate — if opens fell but replies held, distrust the pixel. If both fell together, it's real (and it's probably #1).
6. The list changed
New lead source, deeper scrape, different segment — a colder or worse-verified list opens less. If the drop lines up with a list refresh, compare segments before touching anything else.
